Thomas Was Alone creator Mike Bithell sets out to ‘become a full indie’

Mike Bithell, the developer of the puzzle-platformer Thomas Was Alone for PC and Mac, has left Bossa Studios after joining in February 2011 as a lead designer.

It's a move that he feels comfortable making since the game has done well in sales — "not miraculously well, not FTL well, but kind of well enough," Bithell told GI.biz. "And it's given me enough money in the bank to go and see what I can do for a couple of years. So I'm going off to become a full indie."

That doesn't mean he's going it alone, not totally. Bithell says he has huge support from Twitter and the Thomas community to lean on, and he noted David Housden's and Danny Wallace's help with music and voice-overs, respectively.

But Thomas was a person accomplishment as well — a game he made while teaching himself Unity.

"I'm going to miss [Bossa], to be honest," he said. "I'm going to miss being in a room full of cool people, I think I might go a little bit crazy without them. But they've been awesome and so supportive with Thomas, there's not many games companies that would allow someone to make a game in their own time and then sell it independently and do all that kind of stuff. They're badass."
