Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert Reunite at Double Fine

In between firing salvos at Activision and CEO Bobby Kotick, Double Fine’s Tim Schafer has apparently found the time to hire an old friend.

Ron Gilbert, who just recently left Hothead Games following the successful launch of this summer’s Diablo-like RPG spoof DeathSpank, has accepted a position at Double Fine. Schafer and Gilbert previously worked together at LucasArts where they, along with Telltale Games’ Dave Grossman, created the Monkey Island series in 1990.

In an interview with Kotaku, the pair joked about Gilbert’s new job title (he’d like to be “executive vice Ron Gilbert” someday) and talked about his new game. “It’s an idea that I’ve been batting around for many, many years,” Gilbert said. “I’ve been talking to Tim over the last couple of months about it and it sort of percolated back up. It’s very different than DeathSpank, it’s a bit of a departure from that. It’s going in a very interesting direction.”

“Fans of those old adventure games will like it.”

Double Fine recently decided to switch gears and develop four smaller projects at once, rather than work on one large triple-A game. And with THQ-published Costume Quest nearly ready to ship, Gilbert’s game will be worked into the company’s production rotation.
