The fourth quarter of the calendar year is the hottest time to release a game. It represents the best possible mix of hype with the consumer's need to shop due to Black Friday and the holiday season. However, there's only so much room to go around, and as EA has found out with Titanfall 2, sales can be pretty hard to come by if there's stiff competition, even if it's with themselves.
During the company's Q3 2017 earnings conference call, EA CEO Andrew Wilson preached faith in the game's future financial performance based on a belief that sales will continue to be steady in the months and years ahead.
He said in regards to Titanfall 2's sales performance:
"We’re not seeing it as underperformance at this juncture. What we have demonstrated as an organization is that with great games, we can sell them for many months and often many years."
This is certainly true, especially with multiplayer-focused games. Titanfall competitors like Call of Duty and Battlefield are notorious for their ability to maintain a constant player base, even through older iterations of the games. Yes, even despite all the internet hate.
It's clear that EA sees Titanfall as a franchise that's in line with the likes of its main competitors, and why not? The game was one of 2016's Game Award nominations for GOTY, and currently holds an average Metascore of 89, which is on par with, if not better than its competitors.
Respawn will also be continuing to support Titanfall 2 post launch with completely free DLC, so clearly the game still has a lot of life left in it.
