Today’s the release of Microsoft’s Windows 8 Operating System!

Today is October 26 which, in case you haven't noticed, is the day Microsoft's new Windows 8 Operating System releases to the world. Introducing an all-new touch-enabled interface that attempts to bridge the gap between personal computers and mobile devices, Windows 8 is perhaps Microsoft's biggest, if not riskiest, change to the operating system.

The most noticeable change for Windows 8 is the new user interface based on Microsoft's Metro design language, similar to that seen on the Windows Phone and Xbox 360. It features a new tile-based Start screen with each tile representing a different application and displaying relevant information to that app.

“We have reimagined Windows and the result is a stunning lineup of new PCs,” said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. “Windows 8 brings together the best of the PC and the tablet. It works perfect for work and play and it is alive with your world. Every one of our customers will find a PC that they will absolutely love.”

Other features of Windows 8 include include Internet Explorer 10, native support for USB 3.0, Xbox LIVE integration, and a redesigned Task Manager.

Windows 8 is available for download to upgrade existing PCs in more than 140 markets and 37 languages. It comes in two primary versions — Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro — as well as Windows 8 Enterprise for large organizations. You can upgrade to Windows 8 directly from Microsoft's website.
