Developer Two Tribes originally planned to release Toki Tori 2 on the Wii U eShop in December. Sadly, things didn't go as planned, and the puzzle platformer was pushed back to early 2013. The studio has released some statements regarding the delay, and the reasons posed by Two Tribes are 100 percent valid.
According to the developer, the game simply wasn't ready to be put on the eShop. "It wasn’t pretty. It was very ugly actually. There was no way in hell we would have been able to ship the game the next day. Not because I could still think up new puzzles, but because we had fooled ourselves into thinking it could be possible, ignoring the obvious truth."
Among the development issues with Toki Tori 2 were linearity problems, performance issues, and a lack of testing. Additionally, the visuals, while complete, were not exactly being utilized to their full potential. The result was a game that didn't offer environments as pretty as they could've been.
I definitely appreciate the honesty of the studio, and it's great to see a dev working on a game until it's finished rather than letting fans pay money for an incomplete product. Good on ya, Two Tribes! We look forward to Toki Tori 2!
