Paramount Pictures has revealed that fan favorite Transformer Bumblebee will be getting a standalone spinoff film in 2018.
The studio recently revealed that three new Transformers films, initially revealed at Transformers 5, 6 and 7, will all be released in June of 2017, 2018 and 2019 respectively. The 2018 film will serve as the Bumblebee spinoff film and sandwiched in between the two standalone films. Brad Grey, the CEO of Paramount Pictures, spoke with the Hollywood Reporter and said “There are characters in the Transformers universe that can be and should be made into their own movies. We will make the first movie with Michael and go right into a Bumblebee movie, which will be at a lower cost.”
Thatlower cost part basically means because Michael Bay isn't making any more films after 2017, and that the movies have been a cash cow for Paramount so far, they can afford to hire a much cheaper director. After all, if someone they want says no, there will definitely be someone lined up to get their name out there.
There is no exact story yet as the team is still finalizing which direction they want to take the film. According to Mr. Grey,
“We’ve brought in a pretty strong writing staff run by Akiva Goldsman, and they have put together eight or nine interesting stories. So, between that group and Steven Spielberg’s guidance on a story level, these characters are a big business for us to pursue.”
The films are scheduled to release on June 23 2017, June 8 2018 (Bumblebee) and June 28, 2019. The 2017 and 2019 films do not have exact titles yet with only Transformers 5 and 7 as working titles respectively. Remember, Transformers 4 was titled Age of Extinction and earned over $1 billion world wide.
