Treyarch: Cutting the campaign from Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 on PS3, Xbox 360 wasn’t an easy decision

In September, Activision and Treyarch revealed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 would make its release on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 without a feature that some would consider major – the campaign mode. According to the developers, the game would be launching with only multiplayer becuase the older consoles simply could not handle the "ambitious scope" of the campaign mode.

Black Ops 3's producer, Jason Blundell, has supported Activision's decision to cut the feature, but recognizes it to be a major loss for the console's affected.

"When I heard that an old-gen version was going to be made outside of Treyarch, and found out the things that would have to be cut in order for it to work, I was fully behind Activision's decision to remove it," said Blundell to GameSpot.

Removing the campaign and offering a bonus game instead of releasing a shoddy version of the campaign wasn't a choice that came easily – too many people play game campaign's for it to be easily cut.

"You say that fewer people are playing campaigns these days, but our metrics say different," he said. "This was an active topic at Treyarch, until our numbers showed us that, regardless of what you read on forums, players spend a good amount of time in all modes."

Blundell went on to describe that while he supported Activision's decision, it went against his personal views. "I'll say this, and this is my personal view, the death of storytelling and the death of campaign is the death of society. As a medium, we have to tell stories. For Black Ops, it's absolutely essential to continue the art of storytelling."

Somewhat dramatic, but you get his point.

Personally, I've always played the Call of Duty campaigns (as well as the multiplayer). I have no idea why, but I always beat the campaign before playing multiplayer.
