Ubisoft abandoning mature Wii U games after Watch Dogs, still interested in the platform

Ubisoft is sticking to their plan to bring Watch Dogs to Wii U, albeit it several months after its release on other platforms, but will not be developing any other mature titles for the platform for the foreseeable future.

“[Watch Dogs] is coming to Wii U,” CEO Yves Guillemot told GameInformer. “It will be the only mature game we publish on it.” Guillemot noted that the decision stems from their experience with the Nintendo audience, specifically that it has demonstrated lower interest in mature gameplay than that of other platforms.

“What we see is that Nintendo customers don’t buy Assassin’s Creed. Last year, we sold in very small numbers,” he said. Indeed, the studio’s landmark stabby-stabby IP proved comparatively unpopular on Wii.

However, Ubisoft isn’t done with Nintendo altogether.

“What we see is that they are very interested in Just Dance, very interested by other kinds of games. So what we are trying to do is to focus more on the types of games they are interested in.”

Just Dance 2014 will hit Wii U this October, but just what those other kinds of games are remains to be seen, though all signs point to new installments from the likes of Rayman, Marvel or Rabbids.
