Ubisoft defends annual Assassin’s Creed releases

Ubisoft doesn’t hide the fact that they approach every new IP with a franchise mindset, an approach most apparent in the Assassin’s Creed series. With two new AC games—Rogue and Unity— in the 2014 pipeline, the studio recently took the opportunity to speak to the merits of such frequent releases.

Assassin’s Creed Rogue producer Karl von der Luhe told Eurogamer (during a gamescom interview) that arguments against the IP’s annual structure are only from “a vocal minority that feel that way,” but that the vast majority of fans are on board.

“There are hardcore Assassin’s Creed fans that are happy to play two games and there are of course many fans who have not yet made that financial move to go next-gen,” Luhe said. “And these are the guys that we’re really catering for—they’re thankful for the fact that they will have a compelling Assassin’s Creed game to play on either their Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.”

Luhe went on to confirm that the studio decided to release two games in 2014 years ago.

“The idea of being a Templar has been around for years—ever since AC1. Locking down the actual idea and story, that was around two years ago.”
