With E3 around the corner, we have heard plenty of rumors around the supposed next Xbox One and PlayStation console. Both consoles have been suggested to be upgrades of the console they would be following, but Ubisoft's CEO believes that the future of gaming will not be similar to that way it is now.
Like analyst Michael Pachter, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot believes that this generation will be followed by consoles without optical drives. Unlike Pachter, however, Guillemot believes that we will get another round of disk based consoles, before we move on to the future of streaming only consoles.
"Now on the console side, we expect there will be new consoles that are going to make this market continue to grow and we feel it's… we'll still have another generation of consoles before we have new types of consoles coming to the market," said Guillemot during an earnings call.
"We believe in streaming–it demands lots of bandwidth," he said. "We think it's going to grow but today, with the types of games we have, it will still take a bit of time to be more popular."
Guillemot's belief in the all digital console carried onduring the phone call:
"For the new consoles, there's nothing official on that so my expectation is we will have another cycle of consoles before we go to streaming. I don't have dates or anything but what I see is the manufacturers would prefer to have again a new hardware to take up the potential of new possibilities that they can bring.
Guillemot's belief is not baseless, digital sales have begun to surpass physical sales. In fact, EA's boss has echoed Guillemot's thoughts on a "digital future."
