Despite the fact that Nintendo's newest console, the Nintendo Switch, has sold nearly 5 million units and has become an instant hit, Ubisoft's upcoming game, Skull and Bones, may not be available on the hybrid console.
Skull and Bones is a highly detailed, massive open-world pirate game, with a heavy focus on naval combat. Because of the game's vast openness and highly detailed world, Ubisoft doesn't think the Nintendo Switch would be able to handle it.
Speaking with Gamespot, Ubisoft Singapore's Justin Farren, the creative director on Skull and Bones, said, "Our world is pretty rich in terms of the world that we're bringing to life. We haven't really talked to much about the Switch, but if that becomes a reality then we would maximize the strengths of the Switch."
While it's not a direct, no, it shows that Ubisoft isn't considering the Switch as an option for Skull and Bones at the moment. While that might change in the future, Farren's statement makes it clear that Ubisoft is looking to get the game right on other consoles first.
Farren went on to say, "There's not too much I can say about any specific console, but I will say that we're targeting PC and consoles. Every bit of the technical team is focused on making sure we are maximizing the strength of the consoles we're targeting. So when you read about more memory or rendering, those are things we're leveraging."
Basically, if Ubisoft were to try to bring Skull and Bones to Switch, there would have to be some major compromises and is that something Ubisoft is willing to do, in order to make a shoddy port? Probably not.
The decision not to try and port Skull and Bones doesn't mean that Ubisoft doesn't have a fondness for the Switch, the company is very console agnostic and is already planning to bring other games to Nintendo's console like, Rayman Legends, Steep and of course, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, where Nintendo is giving Ubisoft license to make a game featuring Mario.
