Ubisoft's Executive Director of EMEA, Alain Corre, claims the upcoming Assassin's Creed movie is about more than just making money.
We're still a good six months away from the release of the Assassin's Creed movie starring Michael Fassbender, but fans of the popular series are speculating how accurately the adaptation will portray the game. The initial trailer gave us a taste of what we can come to expect from the project, but it goes without saying that skepticism has been running high considering video game movies are notorious for failing, both narratively and commercially.
In a recent interview with MCV, Ubisoft's Executive Director of EMEA, Alain Corre, spoke on the subject of the company's intentions with the movie and why he thinks the endeavor is a worthwhile choice for the sake of the brand:
“We are not going to earn a lot of money from it. It is a lot more a marketing thing, it is also good for the image of the brand. Although we will make some money, it is not the purpose of this movie. The purpose is to bring Assassin’s Creed to more people. We have our core fans, but what we would like is to put this franchise in front of a lot more people who, maybe, will then pick up future Assassin’s Creed games.”
While this makes it sound like their intentions are more in the wheelhouse of a long-game for the sake of marketing, Corre assures fans and movie-goers the film should please anyone as it stands, whether you've played the games or not:
"Ubisoft's core vision is to create top quality entertainment and experiences. For the Assassin’s Creed film, we have worked closely with our partners at New Regency and 20th Century Fox as well as the talented cast and production team from the very beginning to ensure we deliver a quality experience to ours fans. We strongly believe the Assassin’s Creed brand has this cross-over appeal that will please both video games fans and movie goers."
