European retailer CEX has recently suffered a security breach. The breach has potentially put 2 million customers at risk of their personal details being exposed. This includes first names, surnames, addresses, email, and phone numbers. Most importantly, it also includes "encrypted data from expired credit and debit cards up to 2009."
The hack was carried out by an "unauthorized third party," and CEX is reportedly working with, "the relevant authorities, including the police." It's unclear what customers and what specific data has been shared, but the company is contacting the previously mentioned 2 million people as a precaution. They've also reassured that no valid financial information has been lost, as they stopped storing customer card information in 2009.
Lastly, they've also noted that no in-store customers should be affected. The data that was compromised was online-only. Regardless, they recommend changing passwords just to be safe and minimize the risk. Being proactive in the matter, CEX says that if you haven't received an email from them specifically talking about recommended steps, then your account is safe.
CEX is a large second-hand video game and technology retailer in the UK. There is also a select number of stores in the US.
