Unity 4.3 officially releases for PS4

Unity has announced the full public release of its Unity 4.3 game engine for PlayStation 4.

As just a regular gamer, this probably means little to you except that you'll probably get some sweet new games. But for a developer this means support for powerful next-gen technologies such as Shader Model 5 and compute shaders. Unity already offers support for all DualShock 4 features including accessing each controller's individual speaker, touchpad, vibration and light color. Plus Unity 4.3 also supports camera features such as depth detection, hand and face positioning and PS Move detection. Full support for integration with Project Morpheus, Sony's VR headset, is said to be coming soon.

So what's next?

"Right now the development team are splitting their efforts between two goals. We will continue to improve, optimize and support the ongoing 4.3 releases. At the same time, we’re working on bringing Unity 5.0 to PlayStation 4 as soon as possible," Unity's Alex McLean said on the company blog.

"As there’s lots to do, we won’t be releasing Unity for PlayStation builds for upcoming dot releases in the Unity 4.x cycle. We will, however, continue to deliver regular 4.3 releases and will likely continue to run these releases alongside initial alpha and beta releases of Unity 5.0 when the time comes. We’ll update on 5.0 news for PlayStation 4 once we have it."

Though today marks the full public release, some games built in Unity have already shipped on the PS4 including Stick it to the Man by Zoink! Games and CounterSpy by Dynamighty.
