Unity Technologies today revealed plans to expand upon their movement to make games development more readily accessible by releasing specific, key components of its Unity engine to the public.
The first steps in this new movement will be the Unity Test Tools and GUI, GamesIndustry reports. Under the company’s current licensing agreement, users will be able to “control, customize and extend” the two. Ultimately, this amounts to Unity users being able to further tweak the engine, presumably to tailor it with their game in mind.
“Beyond that, we don’t have a concrete plan,” Unity said, “but we have a lot of things in the pipeline. These components will all be isolated from Unity in such a way that you can modify them and use your own modified version with the official public Unity release.
“Although Unity Technologies has been active in the open-source community for quite some time, this is the first time we’ll be opening the source to components of Unity itself.
“We’re excited to see what you do with,” the company concluded.
Unity’s innards are currently available for access at BitBucket, with an explanation on how to properly utilize them available through Unity directly.
