Unity Technology and SCEA have announced a partnership that will see Unity tools developed for PlayStation platforms. This means that games built using the Unity Engine will be portable to the PS3, PS Vita, PS Mobile, and incoming PS4. Unity maintains its popularity in the industry is due to the ease with with developers can learn its tools.
"Unity is elegant, efficient, approachable, extensible, and affordable. Unity makes it easy to iterate and Unity does the heavy lifting when porting games to other platforms. Code is automatically converted, and just polish and optimization for that specific platform needs to be added. But all the other stuff — the art, the game logic, artificial intelligence, sound — everything else, remains the same."
It's not just independent developers who take advantage of the approachable engine. Even some of the larger industry publishers — EA, Ubisoft, Square Enix — use it for a variety of projects. Although Unity has been supported on the PlayStation 3 for a while now, this is the first time the tools will be made available for public use. Pricing and delivery of Unity for PlayStation will "likely" differ by platform.
Some of the hundreds of games built using Unity tools include Bad Piggies, Temple Run 2, Wasteland 2, and MechWarrior Tactics.
