Universal: Jurassic World ‘designed’ to be a trilogy

Universal Pictures' Chairman Donna Langley has revealed that both Steven Spielberg and Kevin Trevorrow designed Jurassic World to be a trilogy, with ideas for the third film already being discussed.

The franchise that bites back, so to speak, made its triumphant return to the big screen back in May this year, grossing £1.66million across the globe.

Jurassic World's director, Kevin Trevorrow, will be too busy to direct Jurassic World 2, per his commitments to Star Wars: Episode 9. Although Universal's chairman seemingly reassured fans as she discussed the franchise's next steps with Hollywood Reporter.

When asked about the potential difficulties in meeting Jurassic World 2's 2018 release date, Langley said: "There's no reason why we should [have trouble]. Colin Trevorrow is busy working on an outline. He's been working with Steven [Spielberg]. And they have an idea for the next two movies actually. It was designed as a trilogy, unbeknown to us. It's a happy surprise."

Trevorrow might not be directing the first Jurassic World sequel but that doesn't mean he won't contribute to the film, operating in an executive producing/ co-writing role instead.

Back in September Trevorrow claimed that Jurassic World 2 won't be the standard 'dinosaurs chasing people around on an island' film that we've come to expect from the franchise, because the 39-year old seemingly wants to explore a different direction.

Speaking on the Jurassic Cast Podcast Trevorrow spoke in-detail regarding the upcoming sequel, he said: "It will get to be a different kind of film.

"The audience has given us permission to a certain extent to take this to the next level, and I don't necessarily mean in scale, I feel very strongly that it's not about more dinosaurs or bigger and better dinosaurs, it's about using this as a starting point for a much larger story about our relationship with these animals.

"Jurassic World was very much made with the fans in mind, and I'm not going to forget it, but now we've seen a lot of 'dinosaurs chasing people around on an island' movies. I think you guys and also the general audience is going to be down to explore where else we can go."

Many fans will be waiting in anticipation to see what direction these films will take next, with Jurassic World 2 expected to hit our screens on June 22nd, 2018.
