As it turns out, you do not have to beat BioShock Infinite on "hard" to unlock the game's even harder difficulty — though it is certainly possible to do so. For those of you who prefer to tackle the game's hardest difficulty without first proving yourself, you can do so with a cheat code. That's right, BioShock Infinite has a cheat code; I can't remember the last time I've used one of those.
To unlock "1999 mode," BioShock Infinite's hardest difficulty, all you have to do is enter the famous Konami code at the game's main menu. For those of you too young that is:
- For PC and Xbox 360: ↑↑↓↓← → ← → B A (up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A)
- For PS3: ↑↑↓↓← → ← → O X (up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, O, X)
As the name suggests, 1999 mode harkens back to the more difficult gaming times — less frequent auto saves, less ammunition, and harder enemies. Basically, the game is designed to kick your ass.
