Until Dawn creator Supermassive unveils The Dark Picture Anthology

Supermassive Games, creators of PS4 exclusive horror-adventure game Until Dawn have announced a series of horror games, called The Dark Picture Anthology. The series of stand-alone games is starting with Man of Medan. A cinematic horror-adventure in the same vein as Until Dawn and will release next year for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Check out the reveal trailer.

Until Dawn instantly became a must-have not only for PS4 players but lovers of cliche ’90s horror flicks and folks who enjoy a great, local game experience with friends. The multiple choice game left it to the player which of the characters in the game would stay alive in the end, and naturally lend itself to multiple playthroughs and a fun time in general, despite the setting and genre.

“We are incredibly excited to announce the Dark Pictures Anthology and the first game in the series – Man of Medan. With each title being a stand-alone game we have the opportunity to create a unique horror experience every time, with new stories, settings, characters and cast. As a studio we have a passion to deliver powerful cinematic horror, and we can’t wait for players to experience these new games.” – Pete Samuels of Supermassive Games

Being a full console exclusive for the PS4, many players who did not own the console felt left out and with the title’s success, the outlook for Supermassive’s take on adventure games arriving at different shores looked slim. Thus, the announcement today by the developer to create a multiplatform series of similar horror games comes as a surprise.

The British game studio teamed up with publisher Bandai Namco, and is working on a so-called “Anthology” of horror-adventure games, The Dark Pictures. The first entry into the project is Man of Medan. Similarly to Until Dawn, Man of Medan follows the journey of five young people who venture out to a seemingly exciting adventure but get more than what they bargained for. In hopes of finding valuable treasure, our small group of adventurers are sailing out and diving to a World War II shipwreck. What follows is the trademark manifestation of evil, in form of a ghost ship and subsequent race for survival for our protagonists.

The reveal trailer and Supermassive’s great talent at bringing cinematic horror we so love from cheesy movies to the gaming medium, is already having us highly excited for next year when Man of Medan is planned to come out.
