[Update]: Death Stranding’s engine confirmed to be made by Guerrilla Games

Could also be what powers Horizon: Zero Dawn

[Update]: Via the Death Stranding panel happening at PSX, Kojima confirmed the engine is indeed Decima and yes; it's Guerilla Games' tech. Original story below.

[Original]: On Thursday night, after Geoff Keighley handed last year's “Industry Icon” award to the legendary Hideo Kojima, the creator of Metal Gear Solid showed off the second trailer for Death Stranding. Not much is known about the game (other than it looks rad in that Kojima way), and it’s expected to be far off as Kojima earlier this year they were still choosing an engine. Well, it looks as if that choice as been made.

Death Stranding’s engine reportedly made by Guerrilla Games

After watching the trailer at the TGA’s, I noticed that beside the PlayStation and Kojima Productions logos was the title Decima. This was also found on promotional material released via Kojima’s twitter account following the event. If this falls in line with the posters and materials for Metal Gear Solid games, Decima is most likely the name of the game engine powering Death Stranding. After doing a little digging, it seems that we may already have seen this engine in action on another game.

Sources claim that Decima is actually produced by Guerrilla Games and is very likely what is powering their PlayStation 4 exclusive Horizon: Zero Dawn, or at least parts of it. This would make sense as quickly following E3, PS4 architect Mark Cerny and Kojima went on a bro tour of most of Sony’s first party studios. It’s very likely Hideo got an in-depth look at Horizon: Zero Dawn and said “Oooh. I want that!”.

Take this news with a grain of salt, but it’s not hard to imagine that this kind of collaboration between party studios is something Sony would want to occur. We might not have long to wait to find out, as Kojima will be hosting a panel at this weekend’s PSX to discuss the tech behind the game.
