[UPDATING] E3 2016: The Legend of Zelda gameplay shown

Cooking is a huge part of the new Zelda, with you able to form your own makeshift campfires, and then combine different items into recipes that give you different attributes. However, to create a campfire requires certain items. You need firewood, and a fire starter such as a torch or piece of flint.

As Link explores the world for food, a Steppe Talus appears: an unassuming pile of rocks that transforms into a giant boulder monster. Link runs around, and then climbs the back of the monster ala Shadow of the Colossus. He attacks its weak spot, which causes the creature to drop a rare mineral. However, the monster shakes Link off and ultimately defeats him.

There are still so many new details to explore with Breath of the Wind, but until the game releases hopefully these screens and stories have satiated your desire for Zelda news!

When Nintendo Treehouse returns, the hosts are joined by the legendary Shigeru Minamoto, who talks about how Breath of the Wild is breaking the Zelda formula, it is also returning to the roots of the game in many ways. To illustrate this, they show off a drawing from the original Zelda manual which matches the opening shot of Breath of the Wild as Link exits the Shrine of Resurrection.

Some new interest mechanics, showing how things like wind can effect the path which fire will burn. The game shows off the beginning of area near the Temple of Time again, but now Link has all the new tools he’s acquired through the demo and is able to access new areas and hidden items. Link discovers a raft, using a giant leaf to blow wind into its sail.

A third shrine is shown off, Owa Daim. Climbing up the mountain toward it, it’s mentioned that cooking different foods will effect Link in different ways. For example, cooking and eating a “rushroom” will give Link a speed boost. Inside the shrine is the Stasiis Trial.

Link upgrades his Sheikah Slate, giving him the ability to freeze moving objects such as rotating platforms or giant boulders rolling toward you. Link then uses stasis on a stationary boulder. He then repeatedly hits it with a sledgehammer, the energy from the strikes frozen within. When time resumes, the boulder rockets up and out of the way, allowing Link to retrieve the Spirit Orb from Owa Daim.

Next up, we check out some of the weapons in more detail. Weapons will play differently, such as a spear having greater range or an axe dealing more damage but being much slower. There are also two handed swords. Some items can also give Link a temporary health boost, adding yellow hearts to his meter.

Link can also play stealthily. When he crouches, a sound gauge appears showing how much noise Link makes when moving around. Link performs another slo mo move, this time leaping into the air, hanging there as he lets loose several fire arrows. He then comes across another guardian, and some cool combat where the Sheikah Slate’s magnetic abilities are used to control an axe remotely while Link hides behind cover.

We then get to see how the Wolf Link amiibo from the Twilight Princess HD interacts with the new game. You need to upgrade the Sheikah Slate with a rune to unlock this ability, but with the amiibo you can actually bring Wolf Link into the game to accompany you on your journey.

It is finally revealed that there is no actual companion like Navi or Midna that accompanies you in the game, and Wolf Link is the closest the game comes to having that character. Wolf Link’s heart meter is defined by how many hearts you picked up in Twilight Princess HD, and if Wolf Link perishes, you have to wait one whole day in real time in order to use him again. Wolf Link will help you by attacking enemies, and also sniffing out items.

There are also new amiibo to coincide with the game: archer Link, rider Link and a Guardian.

The Guardian is the first posable amiibo, which its arms having articulation. Check out more detailed photos of those here!

The demo takes a break, showing off the awesome display that is Nintendo’s booth.

The game then skips to the top of Resurrection Tower, Link placing markers in the world with his scope. He jumps down, paragliding the the first marker: Shrine Oman Au. There are four main dungeons, but there are over 100 smaller shrines in the game.

Link enters using the Sheikah Slate, takes an elevator down and begins the Magnesis Trial. He finds a podium and sinters the Slate, upgrading it with a rune. There are multiple runes in the game which allow you to upgrade the Sheikah Slate in order to complete puzzles throughout the world. The rune gives the Slate magnetic abilities, which Link uses to manipulate objects in the shrine. He lifts up a platform that reveals a hidden passage under the floor, uses a metal crate to block the incoming blast from an enemy, moves a bridge to cross a gap, and even is able to pull a chest off of a ledge.

Link opens the door to the final room, where the creator of the trial Oman Au sits meditating. He bestows you with a Spirit Orb, which marks that you have completed the trial. Link exits the shrine, now with the magnetic ability. The Sheikah Slate pulses, showing metallic objects in the area. We are now able to notice there are two metal chests in a patch of water outside the shrine, something we could not see before obtaining the new rune.

Link makes it to shine Ja Baij, but is attacked by an awakened guardian. The guardians are much tougher  enemies, and should not be trifled with. In the shrine is the Bomb Trial, with Link upgrading his Sheikah Stone with a rune that gives him both Cubic and Spherical bombs. Bombs are no longer limited, and rather refresh over time. Bombs can now be remotely detonated rather than going off after a certain amount of time. After completing the puzzles, Link meats the creator of the trial and receives his second Spirit Orb.

The demo then skips to further in the game, Link now wearing his new blue garb and adorned with a proper sword, shield and bow. He takes out his scope, setting a marker on a mountain in the distance. He leaps off of the roof of the Temple of Time, whipping out a kite which he uses to gently glide to the ground. On his way to the mountain, he encounters more enemies, stealing their food off of the spit. As he tears down his opponents, a chest unlocks once all of them are vanquished.

Another use of the scope is marking enemies, showing their health bars. This allows you to see if an enemy will be easy or difficult to conquer. Link stumbles across a camp of enemies of higher difficulty, and moves past them, not before looking at his map and marking with a skull icon that there are enemies in that region.

Link continues to climb, temperature dropping and snow on the ground. It shows that Link is actually shivering, and if he doesn’t get warm he’s going to start losing health. But don’t worry; Link has a quilted skirt to wear to warm himself up. He reaches the peak, just in time to catch the sunset!

To get down from the mountain, Link uses his own shield as a snowboard, making the descent much quicker than the ascent. However, this will damage your shield much like if it was used in combat, so use wisely. Discovering a cave, Link obtains several fire arrows. Now well equipped to take on those tougher enemies, Link heads back to that encampment, but not before tearing a Bokoblin’s arm from off of its body and beating it with it. No, seriously. That actually happened.

After opening Nintendo Treehouse with a striking trailer for the new The Legend of Zelda game Breath of the Wild, we were treated to an in-depth gameplay demonstration exploring some of the new game mechanics teased in that very trailer. Everything that was demonstrated today, by the way, was on the Wii U platform and not the NX.

This game was designed with breaking the conventions of Zelda games in mind, according to the game director Eiji Aonuma. The demo opens up with Link waking up from what looks like a cryo chamber inside the Shrine of Resurrection. As we know Link is the hero of time, this seems to indicate this is the moment Link is reborn. He wanders over to a podium and obtains the Sheikah Slate, which will guide Link on his journey. One of it’s first uses is unlocking closed off areas. It is then revealed that for the first time ever, the player can jump of their own free will, in addition to climbing!

Anouma goes onto explain the title of this Zelda installment. Whilst in previous games, subtitles have revolved around characters or items, because of the expansive nature of this world the name Breath of the Wild was chosen. The world is extremely interactive, with Link being able to pick up vegetation as well as freely move around bolders.

Link runs into a mysterious old man resting by the fire, describing this part of the map as the Great Plateau; the birthplace of Hyrule. He informs Link that the world is in a state of decay, and his next destination is a temple in the distance. Link then lights a branch he picked up earlier into a torch, and begins to set a patch of tall grass ablaze as well as light a campfire. He then switches out to an axe, which he uses to chop wood into kindling and can use to make his own campfires.

Link goes for a swim, finding a broadsword ala Sword in the Stone. He approaches the temple, but diverts slightly to combat a group of enemies. During the battle, it is revealed that weapons can be damaged, and that you can unconventional items like pot lids as shields. After Link’s sword breaks, he steals an enemy's spear and uses it against him. Now armed with a makeshift shield and spear, Link heads toward the Temple of Time.

It is revealed hearts have been removed from the game, Link now regaining health by eating food items. Link runs into another enemy, and hurtles his spear. The weapon breaks, but he is able to pick up the fallen enemy’s club. When he encounters his next foe, time slows down and Link is able to unleash a flurry of attacks.

Link continues to explore the area outside the Temple of Time, finding several items including a bow and arrow. As they continue to show off the world, they announce that some Zelda Miitomo items will be dropping today at 3PM Pacific.
