No, you’re not dreaming. It’s 2019 and Valve has officially announced a new Half-Life game titled Half-Life: Alyx. While it may not exactly be Half-Life 3, it seems to still be a prominent title for the renowned developer.
After rumors began bubbling up this year including one earlier today suggesting an announcement at The Game Awards, Valve decided to confirm what we’ve all been hearing. The studio took to Twitter to confirm Half-Life: Alyx as their “flagship” VR title and they’ll do a proper reveal this Thursday at 10AM PT.
The leak earlier today included a transcript from what will be on the teleprompter at The Game Awards in December. Host Geoff Keighley asks why would they make this exclusive to VR and a Valve developer responds by saying that while they’d love to make a regular version, it’s an exploration of VR.
Rumors suggest that the VR-exclusive title is a single-player story-driven FPS where you play as Alyx Vance. The game will not be a continuation of Half-Life 2: Episode 2 but instead, bridge the gap between Half-Life 1 and 2’s story. It also begs the question of if this could lead to the return of the revolutionary sci-fi shooter at a later date or if this was just a way to get people sold on VR.
Only time will tell and we won’t have much longer to wait. It’s unclear if there will be any more news regarding the title in December or if Valve has simply changed their plans to move the announcement up to this week following the leak.
Half-Life: Alyx is reportedly slated for release in March 2020. The Game Awards will air on December 12th.
