Valve employees hope to make Half-Life 3 following success of Alyx

Valve runs a pretty untraditional studio. Developers are pretty much allowed to do whatever they want, they’re given a lot of freedom but of course, that means they have to build their own teams for games which could be difficult. That makes it hard to make a really large scale game like a new Half-Life game.

That said, the company has had this new internal resurgence which led to the release of Half-Life: Alyx. The VR-exclusive game was a long-awaited return to the beloved series and pleased fans and critics alike. It only begs the question, though: When do we get Half-Life 3?

Well, Half-Life 3 has been attempted many times at Valve but never really got anywhere worthwhile. Some of that is for technical reasons, some of it is because Valve is scared to touch this series. It’s a franchise with a feverish fanbase that has only become more rabid as time has gone on. Now that they’ve proven they can go back and succeed, they’re not afraid anymore.

“The ice has been broken, now we’re hoping to smash through the ice completely. We’re not afraid of Half-Life no more,” said Valve level designer Phil Co in Geoff Keighley’s new making of feature, The Final Hours of Half-Life: Alyx.

Other Valve employees expressed that there is a strong hunger to make more Half-Life titles for “all traditional gaming platforms”. This means outside of VR, a Half-Life 3 with just your standard keyboard and mouse (maybe even a controller?) is very much a possibility.

Now that we’ve got a taste of making big stuff again we want to keep doing that. Going from this to a big new thing, which will be even bigger, is pretty exciting” said Valve’s Tejeev Kohli.

Whatever the case may be, Valve has been developing a new game in secret since 2018. Half-Life: Alyx heavily hints at Half-Life 3 in its post credits scene, definitely ensuring the future of Half-Life is safe and secure at Valve.
