Vin Diesel confirms release dates for next three Fast & Furious movies

The next installment in Universal's Fast & Furious franchise — "Fast 8" — will race into theaters on April 14, 2017. We've known that for a while though.

But back in September, Vin Diesel first revealed plans for a new Fast & Furious trilogy. “Universal has been so good to me and so trusting of the vision… they have been like family,” Diesel wrote in a Facebook post at the time. “I promised the studio I would deliver one last Trilogy to end the saga."

We finally know the dates for the remaining two films.

Taking to social media, franchise star Vin Diesel confirmed the release dates of the next two films planned for the franchise. According to Vin Diesel, Fast & Furious 9 will release on April 19, 2019, followed by Fast & Furious 10 on April 2, 2021.

If the phrasing of Vin Diesel's social post is any indication, Fast 10 should mark the end of the popular action-racing franchise that began back in 2001.

Originally, Fast & Furious 7 was supposed to be part of a new trilogy, but things changed suddenly when franchise star Paul Walker died in a tragic car accident unrelated to the film. As a result of Walker's passing, the original ending of the film was changed from "setting up the bigger world of where the Fast & Furious franchise could go into," said director James Wan at the time, to "make a movie that finishes and that just outright is a tribute to Paul Walker."

Vin Diesel, a close friend of Paul Walker, has recently said Fast 8 is more of a tribute to Walker's memory. “Paul Walker used to say that eight was guaranteed. And in some ways, when your brother guarantees something, you sometimes feel like you have to make sure it comes to pass,” he told MTV back in April of 2015. “So if fate has it, F8…if fate has it, then you’ll get this when you hear about it. Seven was for Paul, eight is from Paul.”

The recently revealed poster for Fast 8 teased "new roads ahead" for the franchise. What that means for the next three films remains to be seen, but we're excited to travel this long road with Vin Diesel.
