Vita sales up in Japan, but the 3DS still king

Sony's recent price cut for the PlayStation Vita in Japan has resulted in booming sales for the handheld, though it still failed to dethrone the Nintendo 3DS. Since its price cut, Vita sales are up nearly six times, according to the latest numbers from Media Create. For the week of February 25 through March 3, the Vita sold 62,543 units in Japan — up 11,456 from the pervious week.

Despite the sales increase, the Vita still managed to fall short of the 3DS, which sold 77,439 units (standard and LL models combined). While the Vita still has quite a ways to go until it catches the 3DS, this is certainly a positive sign for Sony who recently admitted has to do a better job "promoting the Vita." I'd say a price cut was a good start. We'll continue to track the Vita's sales stats in relation to the sale.

It will definitely be interesting to see where the Vita goes from here and how Sony will react. Given the success of the price cut, you'd think they might reconsider the stance of not cutting the Vita's prices anywhere outside of Japan.  Below are the hardware sales in Japan, according to Gematsu.

Hardware Sales (followed by last week’s sales)

  1. PlayStation Vita – 62,543 (11,456)
  2. 3DS LL – 50,265 (49,317)
  3. 3DS – 27,174 (25,412)
  4. PlayStation 3 – 25,725 (18,529)
  5. PSP – 11,171 (8,981)
  6. Wii U – 10,021 (9,633)
  7. Wii – 1,383 (1,317)
  8. Xbox 360 – 486 (473)
