When it comes to super hero / comic book films, I'm pretty balanced with what I like. I loved Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. I loved Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers. I like Man of Steel. I've also hated Green Lantern and a few X-Men movies. Movies from both comic book studios have been pretty successful, but it's impossible to deny that Marvel is on a tear right now. There are so many more movies coming out in the next five years that it's a little hard to wrap your head around.
While Marvel expands its cinematic universe, DC is also building out its Justice League universe, starting with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016. There's some worry of comic book movie fatigue, but Warner Bros. chairman-CEO Kevin Tsujihara doesn't see that. He thinks that there's enough difference and diversity with the characters, movies, TV and games to whet everyone's appetite.
The main thing that Tsujihara thinks DC and Warner Bros. has going for it, is that their movies are edgier and based in reality. You can see that just from Christopher Nolan's Batman films and Zach Snyder's Man of Steel, as well as what we've seen of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Aquaman. He told Variety, "The worlds of DC are very different. They're steeped in realism, and they're a little bit edgier than Marvel's movies."
And he's right; they are. That doesn't mean they are better. It's just different strokes for different folks. As a fan of super hero films and comics, I can appreciate the films both studios are putting out. The same goes for TV. Arrow and Flash are two excellent examples of good super hero TV series, while I'm a little disappointed with Gotham. But we can see from the Daredevil Netflix trailers that the series will have the same edgy tone that DC has become known for. It's obvious that Marvel can have a serious tone while keeping things fun, and their continuity is at an all-time high, especially after the Marvel-Sony deal for Spider-Man. But Warner Bros. and DC have fully embraced the gritty.
We'll see how much edgier DC can get with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice when it releases on March 25, 2016, followed by Justice League Part 1 on November 17, 2017, Aquaman on July 27, 2018, and Justice League Part 2 on June 14, 2019.
