Blizzard drops the first animated trailer and character details for the newest addition to the 'Overwatch' roster, Doomfist.
'Overwatch' has released three new heroes since its initial debut last year, Ana, Sombra, and Orisa. While these heroes have had mixed opinions and introduced different changes to the meta, there has been no character as anticipated as the legendary Doomfist. Fans knew Doomfist was coming ever since the first cinematic reveal trailer for the game, which featured Doomfist's skyscraper-leveling gauntlet as the McGuffin.
Finally, after all the speculation and waiting, Blizzard has finally revealed Doomfist and how he'll function. From what we've been told, he was planned to be a melee based damage character, requiring more physical contact than projectiles. From what they've revealed, that appears to have held true. The first tease comes in the form of an animated short just unveiled via PlayOverwatch.com:
The official description of Doomfist's playstyle reads as follows:
Doomfist’s cybernetics make him a highly-mobile, powerful frontline fighter. In addition to dealing ranged damage with his Hand Cannon, Doomfist can slam the ground, knock enemies into the air and off balance, or charge into the fray with his Rocket Punch. When facing a tightly packed group, Doomfist leaps out of view, then crashes down to earth with a spectacular Meteor Strike.
According to game director, Jeff Kaplan, Doomfist is one of the high commanders of the Talon organization. As one of the hardest hitting characters, he'll have the ability to plow right through barriers and shields with his Rocket Punch, including Reinhardt's! Thanks to his Siesmic Slam, he'll be able to temporarily stun opponents and launch them closer to him, allowing for more combos and damage. With his passive, known as 'The Best Defense…', he'll acquire a temporary shield over time as he does more damage, which will also deteriorate as less damage is dealt.
While all this is great news and fans are clamoring for the chance to play Doomfist after all this time, many are wondering as to why actor Terry Crews was not chosen to do the voice of the character, even though he has been petitioned by fans to do so and even endorsed himself. Despite that fact, its still a reveal that players have anticipated since the beginning and most are just pleased to finally get to meet him.
No word yet on when Doomfist will finally be available to play, so check back for more updates on the future of the character!
