[Watch] Cuphead Devs Talk About Their Hardest Boss

Lots of artistic strategy went into such a hate-able boss!

Cuphead has finally hit the market after what seemed like an eternity in development. Not only has it released, but it's done pretty well for itself, hitting a million units sold last month. The brutal, yet beloved title has a unique art-style, and the devs are very keen on sharing details, as seen in this video.

The game takes a familiar visual style akin to old cartoons like Steamboat Willie, which is made pretty obvious right away. In the video below (via GameSpot), Lead Designer Jared Moldenhauer and Art Director Chad Moldenhauer talk about designing one of their notorious boss battles: The Dragon, Grim Matchstick.

As mentioned in the video, old-timey cartoons weren't the only inspiration. Gameplay-wise, Mega-Man was also a big draw for inspiration, especially in its unapologetic difficulty. As far as the art style goes, however, it's more than just a simple art direction. The creators took specific scenes from old cartoons that they liked and applied their effects to the level.

Cuphead is out now, receiving stellar reviews from multiple outlets. Be warned, however, it is not an easy game. Phil Spencer, the big man of gaming at Xbox hasn't even beat all the bosses yet.
