[Watch] First trailer for animated Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, gets revealed

Spider-Man is one of the biggest characters in all of fiction. He's graced the silver screen six times with three different actors playing the titular role, he has been around for roughly 60 years with various different stories being told about the character, and so much more. He's an icon for many reasons and while Marvel prepares the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, Sony has been working on an animated theatrical Spider-Man film.

The film, titled Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, will focus primarily on Miles Morales, a half-black, half-latino teenage boy who rises as a hero after the death of Peter Parker in the comics. The film looks to follow that backstory as we see Peter Parker's grave for a brief second in the trailer.

The plot is a mystery right now but the first teaser trailer revealed that we'll be delving deep into the Spider-Verse, showing a number of different Spider-Men. While the only confirmed Spider-Man to star in this film is Miles Morales, it's heavily teased multiple versions will appear. We also see The Prowler (voiced by Academy Award winner and Madden NFL 18 star Mahershala Ali) in a couple very brief shots but the film's primary villain is set to be voiced by Liev Schriber. The film also boasts an incredibly gorgeous visual direction with vibrant colors, incredible cinematography, and much more. You can get a taste of the animated feature film below.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is scheduled to hit theaters on December 14th, 2018 and is written by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, directors of films like 21 and 22 Jump Street, former directors of Solo: A Star Wars Story, and more. This film will be independent of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is unconnected to any Spider-Man live-action spin-offs from Sony.
