Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is quietly picking up steam as it heads towards launch. IGN got some exclusive gameplay footage of Hellblade in action, and it is just about the best possible representation of the game's attempts to blend its protagonist's psychosis with the moment-to-moment gameplay.
Check it out:
One of the things about the trailer that stands out the most are the voices that whisper in Senua's mind as she faces off the demons, particularly the one that says "behind you." This is a subtle but incredibly effective way of circumventing the limitations of the tight-knit cinematic camera angle that the game uses and eliminating what would otherwise be a cheap shot from behind by the enemy.
On top of that, the shapes that Senua sees in front of her at random are tied to aspects of the environment that the player must satisfy in order to make progress. This is one cool experiment, and I can't wait to play.
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice releases on August 8th, 2017 for PS4 and PC.
