[Watch] Invader Zim will return to Nickelodeon via a TV movie featuring the original cast

In the late 90s/early 2000s, Nickelodeon was at the top of its game. It had some of the best cartoons such as Rugrats, Spongebob Squarepants, Rockos Modern Life, Ren and Stimpy, and much more. Nickelodeon was the go to place for many people's TV fix in the 90s. Some would say they've really fallen off and have become much more tame compared to their edgy and somewhat adult humor from the 90s. Of course, most of the people who were born in that time don't sit in front of the TV and watch cartoons 24/7 anymore, but some people do miss those genuinely great shows. Nickleodeon has been listening and are aiming to bring back some classic shows to via TV movies.

Today, it was revealed that Invader Zim will return to Nickelodeon in an all-new 90 minute original TV movie. The project was revealed via a teaser trailer voiced by Zim (Richard Horvitz) and Zim's robot companion Gir (Rosearik Rikki Simmons). The teaser reveals that Zim and Gir will return to Earth in an attempt to successfully destroy mankind to impress his alien culture, similarly to the plot of the show which only aired for one season.

“As a network that prides itself on a 25-year history of creating groundbreaking, hilarious animation for kids, Invader Zim is one of our great loves. It’s been so exciting to see its popularity grow over the last decade through social media, consumer products, and the Zim comic books,” said Nick’s senior VP, Content Development and Production, Animation, Chris Viscardi

The original cast and crew of the show, including creator Jhonen Vasquez, will return to take on the untitled film.

“What makes this announcement extra thrilling is the adventure that Jhonen has created for Zim, and I can promise you that it is as wonderfully absurd and strangely heartfelt as any fan of the original series could hope for, and kids seeing it for the first time will love it too.”

For those out of the loop, Invader Zim was an animated show from 2001 that starred an alien in a weird town on Earth. His mission was to create a plan to destroy the planet alongside his robot companion Gir all while being disguised as an unassuming kid. The show was edgy, weird, and very funny despite being cancelled after one season. Invader Zim lived on through other forms of media such as comic-books, but this'll be his first time back on our television screens since the first season.

The new TV movie has no set air date and is currently in pre-production.
