[Watch] Metal Gear Survive Trailer: Single-Player Gameplay, Crafting, and Base Building

Konami recently shared new gameplay footage of Metal Gear Survive, showing plenty of first looks at new features coming for the game. The trailer includes something not talked about much up until recently: Single-player mode.

While no real amount of story is revealed, the trailer does show what’s to come in terms of action and gameplay. The story, from what we can gather, involves former Mother Base soldiers from Metal Gear Solid V being teleported via wormhole to an unknown world. For some reason, there are also crystalized zombies they must fight. Soldiers seem to have been dropped into the world at random and can be rescued and brought back to base.

As far as gameplay goes, the game seems to control in largely the same way Metal Gear Solid V did. But there are new mechanics involving wormhole technology to help players build things to help them along the way. Traps can be made to ward off zombies, weapons and items can be crafted, and a base can also be constructed and upgraded.

Admittedly, the base aspect seems a bit deeper than Mother Base was in Metal Gear Solid V, but the depth of the particular mechanic was only touched on. It seems to be somewhere near the action of the game, as opposed to Mother Base being located in the middle of the ocean, thus it would likely need to be defended. The traps and base-building mechanics seem very much like Fort Nite‘s mechanics. Take a look at the video for yourself.

Metal Gear Survive will require an always-on connection to the internet even during the single-player campaign. It will launch on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in North America on February 20, 2018 and in Europe on February 22. The beta test for the game starts on January 18 and can be joined on PSN and Xbox Live.
