[Watch] New Venom trailer showcases story and Tom Hardy in action

"We are Venom!"

For the better part of a decade, Sony has been trying to get a solo movie for Spider-Man’s definitive baddie, Venom, off the ground. After a failed Spider-Man reboot and giving the character back to Marvel, many assumed this idea was dead in the water. That was until it was resurrected to kick-off a Spider-Man universe disconnected from the MCU.

Yes, it’s very confusing and we’re not going to get into all of it right here. The point is, Sony got the ball rolling on the movie, cast the brilliant Tom Hardy (Bane in The Dark Knight Rises) in the titular role, and began filming without involving the webhead himself. After several months of filming, we got our first trailer in February but it came with a lot of backlash.

The teaser was kept very brief, told us next to nothing about the movie, and didn’t feature the symbiote outside of one shot of it in a container.  People were pretty upset that their first look at the movie was quite boring but Sony is looking to redeem themselves with the official trailer which has plenty of action, story details, and of course, our first look at Hardy not just as reporter Eddie Brock but as the menacing Venom.

You can check it out below.

If you think that final shot of Venom looks a bit weird, it’s because they aren’t using any practical effects to create him. Unlike the mix of CG with a practical costume that was used on Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, they will be using motion capture and CG to portray Venom in the film. To our knowledge, no suit was made for Tom Hardy to wear when he “is” Venom. Will this work well? Who knows?!

There have also been rumors suggesting that Hardy will not actually be in costume as Venom for much of the movie, it’ll be more along the lines of the tentacles and other weird symbiote powers coming off of him as seen throughout the trailer. This sneak peek may give weight to that rumor but as always, you should still take it with a grain of salt.

Venom will release in theaters on October 5th, 2018.
