[Watch] PlayStation 2 bootup gets faithful recreation in form of PlayStation 4 theme

If you owned a PlayStation 2, one of the most iconic things about that console was undoubtedly the bootup screen. That awesome tune as you fade into a dark birds-eye view of a bunch of almost skyscraper-like structures surrounded by darkness and smoke. The camera flies down towards the ground and if you have a disc in, you get that feeling of relief of hearing a chime and seeing the PS2 logo, signaling your disc is working.

There was an almost uneasy feeling if you didn't have a disc, a dark background with seven stars swirling around on the screen. There was this sound of weird waves in the background and as someone whose PS2 was in their basement, it gave me the creeps for some reason. The PS2 dashboard was magical for a variety of reasons, including the weird things that would happen if you'd put Xbox or Dreamcast games in it. Videos and audio files would play telling you to remove the discs, a hellish red screen would appear if you put an unsupported format in the console, it was really bizarre looking back on it but it was really special and was the home of countless memories.

Now, you can relive the PS2's bootup and home screen via a new PlayStation 4 theme created by Truant Pixel. The new theme will release on December 6th for $2.99 and has all of the original noises pulled directly from the PS2 and put on the PS4. It's truly incredible and in their video's description, Truant Pixel details some of the aspects and hidden features of the theme.

"We are pleased to bring you this theme, created with input from SIE US, Japan, and Naughty Dog.

After multiple prototypes over the last 2 years, each of which were designed to mimic functional aspects of the PS2 Dashboard, we have been given the opportunity to combine multiple disparate elements into a single piece of theme software which mimics the sights, sounds, and functionality of the PlayStation 2 Dashboard.

Upon starting up, users are treated fully recreated 'boot' sequence. PlayStation 2 logo cannot be used due to licensing restrictions, so we have taken an opportunity to create a mid-boot 'Easter Egg,' which changes randomly with every login.

From there, the "Seven Stars" make an appearance, coalescing from random points to recreate the mathematical and dynamic formations to accompany the passage of time, similarly recreated from the original PlayStation 2 bios in the form of the Crystal Clock.

Color shifting is now controlled via user input, with subtle shifts in particle speed and behavior. Additionally, original audio has been taken from the PS2 hardware and recreated in the background ambiance and custom keynotes for this theme.

Lastly, as is our standard, this theme has been designed for 1080p, 4k/UHD, and OLED displays."
