Indie developer Motion Twin has revealed Dead Cells, which is described as a "roguevania action-platformer" that will be coming to Steam this spring. Dead Cells wears its inspirations on its sleeves, referencing Dark Souls, Rogue Legacy, and Salt and Sanctuary as its main points of comparison. The game takes place within "a sprawling, ever-changing castle" that also functions as an interconnected world in traditional Metroidvania style.
Boss battles are described as "Souls-lite" and are pattern-based with timing your dodges being a core aspect of the gameplay. Permadeath is also very much a thing, so trying not to die (or at least die less) is very much an ever present threat, adding that thrill that Souls games are known for. Dead Cells also leverages non-linear progression as every death you take actually unlocks new areas of the game.
If you're going to be at PAX East, Dead Cells will be making an appearance at the show. The game will be located at Booth #28 at the Indie Megabooth and will be showing off an all-new region and a tutorial that will reveal more narrative aspects as well.
There's no concrete release date for Dead Cells at this time, but we will let you know when there is.
