Sea of Thieves is laying it on with little details as evidenced by Developer Rare's latest episode of Inn-side Story, which focuses on the game's Storm systems. While storms aren't anything new to games, Rare's emphasis on their dramatic effect is what stands out. Not only do they look cool, but they affect how you navigate and maintain the ship, just like in the movies.
Here's the video:
As you can see, there's more to sailing than just figuring out a direction and then going there. It's easy to imagine a scenario where a storm stands between you and an island with treasure on it, but going around the storm might force you to engage with an enemy player. So deciding what kind of perils you will face could be a natural and emergent moment simply via the inclusion of Sea of Thieves' storm systems.
Sea of Thieves is coming off a strong showing at E3 2017, where Rare teased the game's storm systems for the first time. Rare is very confident in the game as they have previously called it "the greatest thing [they've] ever done."
Sea of Thieves will release at some point in 2018.
