Agent 47 is one of the most iconic game characters ever. Considering the master assassin’s silent nature, that’s quite the feat. But herein lies the franchise’s biggest strength. It offers players an unprecedented amount of freedom when it comes to how to complete each mission.
The ‘World of Assassination’ trilogy built upon this freedom by doubling down on a true open sandbox. Complementing that are large open maps where you can lose dozens of hours simply scouting for the optimal strategy.
But all good things eventually come to an end. What started in 2016 as an episodic experiment, reaches its conclusion on January 21st. That’s when Hitman 3 launches on PC, Stadia, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
With Hitman 3, the ‘World of Assassination’ ends soon. IO Interactive has big ambitions for the send-off of Agent 47. Improved visuals, gameplay improvement, and of course, an exciting final chapter for the story.
In a surprise move, Hitman 3 will also introduce official VR support on PC and PSVR. A franchise first that will even extend to Hitman 1 & 2. What a brilliant new and immersive way for hobby assassins.
While it’s a bittersweet moment to let go of Agent 47, IO Interactive already has its eyes on a big new project. The studio recently announced a partnership with MGM, where they will create a brand-new James Bond game. There just could not have been a better match for the 007 IP and the creators of the Hitman franchise. It’s going to be exciting to see how IO Interactive’s experience in the stealth-action genre will play out in the new Bond game.
