Deck13 continues to roll out the looks on its upcoming Sci-Fi Action-RPG, The Surge and this time the focus is on the game's limb cutting system. Taking pages from the book of Dead Space, The Surge puts its own spin on limb cutting game mechanics by varying up the kind of loot that will drop from a defeated enemy, depending on which limb you target.
Control over what kind of loot you get is entirely in the hands of the player, as before entering combat, deciding which limb to target is something of a strategic element. You can fight with both vertical and horizontal attacks for better accuracy while aiming, and depending on which limb you cut off, you could end up with a schematic for the sliced armor part, salvaged materials for crafting whichever piece of armor you attacked, or even the weapon previously held by the enemy.
Part of the strategic approach to facing enemies in combat is not only deciding which piece of armor to target, but whether to target an armored section at all. Some areas of enemies are weaker than others, which can be exploited for an easier fight. But an easier fight also equals lesser rewards. Tougher enemies drop the best rewards, so it'll be up to the player to balance the risk versus reward.
The Surge releases on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on May 16th, 2017.
