We almost got Advanced Warfare 2 instead of Call of Duty: WWII

Call of Duty: WWII has been fairly successful so far. The game has doubled Infinite Warfare's opening weekend sales in its first three days and is tracking to make a fairly successful comeback for the franchise.

With Call of Duty: WWII's success, the Activision CEO has revealed that we almost got another futuristic Call of Duty.

“Sledgehammer wanted to make Advanced Warfare 2,” Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg told NewsWeek. Fortunately, Hirshberg and the rest of the folks at Activision were aware of fan requests to tone down the future themes in the franchise and go back to pre-future Call of Duty.

So, Sledgehammer was tasked with bringing a World War II game to life and pick up the theme that made the first six installments of the franchise so successful.

“We knew they would become historians, that they would tackle it with authenticity, give it tremendous care and we also knew they would capture the unspeakable scale of World War II.”

As for the future of Call of Duty, Hirshberg didn't give much away, but he did tease that there was plenty for the developers to pull from. “We have proven sub-franchises, time periods and areas to play in that I think give us a lot of variety.”
