Kratos has been going up against the Greek Gods of Olympus for a while now, but in the latest iteration in the God of War franchise, Kratos will be going up against the Gods of Norse mythology.
Over the last few months, we have heard a few bits of information on the upcoming God of War game from Sony Santa Monica Creative Director Cory Barlog. Mostly, Barlog has confirmed that most of the motion capture footage has been shot and that the game is fully playable (at least for the devs).
Now, Barlog has confirmed that Kratos' son has a name and that name is Atreus.
Kratos son's name is Atreus, nice discovery @fbanin https://t.co/CURm5wzAGD, download @bearmccreary #E3 Overture https://t.co/Xm8wIRA4cb pic.twitter.com/AD8YORwHxb

A Twitter user made the discovery and Barlog confirmed it. Apparently, the name was hidden in the comments section of an MP3 file for the game's Overture – the score that played during the reveal.
A quick search on the actual 'Atreus' of Greek lore shows a pretty ruthless guy. Atreus, with the help of his brother Thyestes, murdered their half-brother in order to get the throne of Olympia. They were banished for what they did, but their mother (who had been banished as well) hung herself. Atreus ended taking the throne (evetually), only to lose it to his brother Thyestes who tricked him. Atreus managed to get the throne back, but found out his wife had an affair with his brother.
To deal with the betrayal from his brother and wife, Atreus killed all of Thyestes' sons and fed them to him. It only gets more twisted from there.
