Anyway, it turns out that "later down the road" is actually today. That really annoying light bar on a DualShock 4 controller is apparently for Project Morpheus.

"That tracking light… it was our department that said we need that on. It was tracking for VR," said Jed Ashforth, Senior Designer at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe told TechRadar.
