Why Microsoft doesn’t ‘support’ standing the Xbox One up vertically

Back in May we reported that you shouldn't stand your Xbox One up vertically. At the time, Microsoft only explained that the design of the airflow and venting system was "optimized for horizontal orientation." This week at the Tokyo Game Show, Albert Panello, senior director of product management and planning at Xbox, reiterated this stance.

"We don't support vertical orientation; do it at your own risk," he told GameSpot. "It wouldn't be a cooling problem, we just didn't design the drive for vertical. Because it's a slot loading drive, we just didnt' design it for both."

According to Panello's stats, this shouldn't affect too many of you. While the Xbox 360 can be positioned horizontally or vertically, Panello revealed that only 20% position the Xbox 360 vertically.

"We found, interestingly enough, that 80% of people, believe it or not, have their Xbox [360] horizontally," he said. My Xbox 360 rests comfortably on my shelf horizontally; however, moving towards the next-generation I have every intention of standing up my PlayStation 4.
