Tons of new information about Star Wars: The Force Awakens was divulged in this month's issue of Entertainment Weekly, but one thing remains a mystery: the last names of certain characters — namely Finn, Rey, and now Kylo Ren, as it was revealed in the issue that "Ren" is not actually his last name.
There's a reason the last names of certain characters in Star Wars: The Force Awakens have not yet been revealed. And as I'm sure you can probably guess, it has everything to do with plot spoilers.
Over the course of the past few months we were introduced to many new characters, including Finn (John Boyega) and Rey (Daisy Ridley). When asked by EW if it was intentional that their last names remain a mystery, director J.J. Abrams teased, "I will only say about that that it is completely intentional that their last names aren't public record."
Abrams may be playing coy, but the studio's decision to keep the characters' last names a mystery might be a spoiler in itself. With fan theories speculating that Rey and Kylo Ren could be the kids of Han and Leia, why else would the studio not reveal their last names unless true?
