Nintendo has posted their financial results for the last fiscal year (ended March 31, 2014), and once again they've failed to meet many of the projections set forth by their own expectations. Even with the lower revised numbers from January, Nintendo's financial results came up short as the company reported a net loss of $228.6 million.
Over the past 12 months, just 2.72 million Wii U hardware units were sold, just short of the 2.8 million Nintendo revised back in January. 18.86 million Wii U games were sold, led by five key first-party titles, including Super Mario 3D World, New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi, each of which have sold over one million copies. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to boost the "slow growth" Nintendo described for its console.
What's more alarming however, is that even the 3DS failed to meet expectations. During the fiscal year, the 3DS — all models included — combined to sell 12.24 million units. That's also just short of the revised 13.5 million projected back in January.
Nintendo did break this figure down into separate 3DS models, revealing that the 3DS XL sold 7.87 million units, while the Nintendo 2DS sold 2.20 million. The original 3DS model sold 2.17 million.
On the bright side, Nintendo 3DS software continued to sell well, with 67.89 million units sold. Leading the way was Pokemon X/Pokemon Y which sold over 12.26 million copies. Animal Crossing: New Leaf has also sold a total of 7.66 million copies since launch. Additionally, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team have each sold more than two million copies.
Despite the down year, Nintendo is hopeful for the next fiscal year. With the upcoming launches of Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, Nintendo expects to sell 3.6 million Wii U consoles and 12 million 3DS systems. Overall, Nintendo projects revenues of $5.61 billion and profits of $196.9 million for the 2014 fiscal year.
