Wii U Gamepad is ‘very comfortable’, says Madden producer

At first glance, the Wii U's blocky GamePad touchscreen controller may look awkward. After years of form-fitting controllers from Microsoft and Sony, the rectangular shape is reminiscent of something we had with the NES. Not to mention, the sheer size of the controller may be a little intimidating for many gamers, despite weighing only one pound.

Rest assured, the innovative Wii U GamePad is anything but awkward. In fact, Madden NFL 13 producer Yuri Bialoskursky admitted that once players get used to its large size, they will find the GamePad "very comfortable". Though he did warn of a period of adjustment.

I had a chance to go hands-on with the controller at E3 and found it surprisingly comfortable, but if you don't want to take my word for it, here's what Bialoskursky had to say about it.

"There's definitely going to be a period of adjustment there. That's all out of our control, but when we've been playing it all throughout development, it's not uncomfortable at all," he said.

Bialoskursky added: "The way that it's laid out, the final controller, is actually very comfortable, and the way that it's all laid out with our features, is all done in a way that isn't intrusive to the game."

"It’s all done in the flow and the context of how the plays are supposed to game and the game really flows," Bialoskursky concluded. "It works really well."

Last week Madden NFL 13 was announced for the Wii U. EA also revealed how the GamePad will function with gameplay, detailing how the system's touchpad controller will make substitutions and pre-snap play calling much more streamlined and simplified.
