Wii U graphics chip ‘seems pretty decent’, according to Tekken director

According to Tekken Tag Tournament 2's director Katsuhiro Harada, the Wii U graphics chip "seems to be pretty decent".

Speaking to Develop, Harada noted that the Wii U was able to "comfortably handle Namco Bandai's 'graphically intensive' upcoming fighting game Tekken Tag Tournament 2".

“While developing Tag 2, since it’s very graphic intensive because of the multiple characters on screen, there was still some power left over for graphic capabilities so the graphics chips seems to be pretty decent,” he said.

Despite his talking of graphics chips, Harada admitted that too much focus has been spent on the Wii U's specs – although it's a pretty funny statement seeing as how he recently spoke about the Wii U's processor clock speed being lower than that of the Xbox 360 and PS3.

"To be honest, that’s not really even relevant because people seem to be focusing too much comparing the raw specs to other hardware," he explained. "You really have to be looking at the capabilities and what features it has."

“For example, if you’re playing Tag 2 on the Wii U at home and your parents get mad at you for taking up the TV too much, you can just take it to your bed and start playing there," he said, defending the Wii U's GamePad controller which features a tablet-like screen.

"Being able to take a high end game and play it in your bed is something that’s really unique so that’s the thing people are kind of missing," he added.

Having the ability to play games on the GamePad separately from the TV won't be an option with every Wii U game, but it looks like that is the route Namco is taking with Tekken Tag 2. Harada touched on the idea of playing the game alone on the GamePad screen after describing the Wii U as "too distracting" for fighting games.
