Considered the first of the "next gen" consoles, the Wii U is a tricky system to get a feel for. While offering unique gameplay thanks to the innovative GamePad controller, many seem to be hung up on the actual power of the system. We've seen numerous gameplay videos and have had multiple hands-on preview sessions with the Wii U, but the big question seems to be how the Wii U stacks up not just against the unknown future of gaming consoles, but even the current Xbox 360 and PS3.
In a recent email interview with Vigil Games, the developers of Darksiders 2 which is slated to be a Wii U launch title on November 18, lead designer Haydn Dalton wouldn't exactly comment on whether the Wii U is a step up from current gen systems; rather, he chose to describe the system as a step in a "different direction".
With the Wii U still being a new toy to explore, many developers are still looking at ways to incorporate the unique controller into their games.
"It’s a step in a different direction," said lead designer Haydn Dalton. "The Wii U hardware provides a unique interface to interact with your game, which in turn provides fresh new ways to enjoy Darksiders 2."
"Playing Darksiders 2 on the Wii U really helps players evade the need to spend time within the inventory," Dalton explained of the Wii U GamePad's functionality. "Having access to equip and use items at any point while continuing to play the game, is very useful."
THQ has already explained that Darksiders 2 on Wii U will use the touch screen to display map and objectives as well as giving quick access to abilities and Death's inventory. Additionally, the system's gyro functionality will be used to evade enemy attacks, manipulate objects in the world, and steer the character during swimming and riding sequences. You'll also be able to play the game directly on the GamePad's screen freeing up the TV for other use.
"We believe that all versions of Darksiders 2 make the most of the specific platforms, but are of a consistent quality, which includes the Wii U," Dalton concluded.
In addition to the unique control scheme on the Wii U, THQ and Vigil Games are also offering plenty of bonus incentives to attract consumers. Darksiders 2 for the Wii U will ship with a selection of bonus content that totals an additional five hours. This includes Argul's Tomb, the game's first downloadable content pack featuring a unique area, three new dungeons, and new weapons and armor. Also included are several add-on packs which add numerous weapons, armor, and quests. The Death Rides pack, Angel of Death & Shadow of Death packs, and Deadly Despair pack are all included.
Darksiders 2 is set to release for the Wii U on November 18, 2012. Will you be purchasing it come launch day?
