Wii U selling at a slower pace than any other Nintendo console… ever

Ouch.

Nintendo has been very open about the sales of their products. Recently the longtime video game developer, publisher and console maker revealed the sales figures for its most recent console, the Wii U.

The Wii U experienced its highest amount of sales in the 2013 fiscal year with 3.45 million consoles sold The most recent sales quarter numbers rival the highest sales year with slightly more than 3.03 million Wii U's sold.

Looking at the life-to-date sales number, two years after release, reveals that the Wii U is the slowest selling Nintendo console — ever. The title previously belonged to the GameCube (if we were to include handhelds in the mix then the title would have been given to the 3DS).

We pulled up the two year sales numbers per console to get a comparison and it hurts to see these numbers:

Just for kicks:

  • 3DS: 10.5 million

Compared to the Wii U's two year sales:

The Wii (my Animal Crossing machine) killed it; the N64 was great (regardless of the fact that I never really knew how to hold the controller the right way. I owned two.); and the GameCube got by well-enough (was it the mini discs? What made it unsellable? I owned one). The 3DS (my other Animal Crossing machine), well, it got by on the skin of its teeth and now it's doing amazing.

*Sales figures for the NES and SNES were not available for a two year sales count.

**Virtual Boy was not included because…well, no one ever includes the Virtual Boy in anything 🙁
