With Ryse: Son of Rome already confirmed to have microtransactions, our attention now turns to Respawn's Titanfall, another Xbox One console exclusive, and whether that too will have an in-game cash shop. After all, it is an EA published title.
"I know we got asked a lot early on, like, will [we] be going near microtransactions, are you going to do that? That's not us," Respawn community manager Abbie Heppe told Videogamer.
"This has been such a journey that I think we're just like, 'Okay, get this one out the door and then we'll worry about everything else'."
Electronic Arts has been one of the leading publishers to embrace microtransactions within their games. Even to the dismay of many, the publisher allowed Dead Space 3 players to purchase in-game resources with real money. Microtransactions were also in Mass Effect 3 and many Need for Speed titles.
Looking to next-gen, EA seems to be on the forefront of microtransactions as well. Battlefield 4 will allow players to pay real money for Battlepacks, gold, silver, and bronze packs that unlock further customization options and XP boosts.
So while microtransactions may not be Respawn, the business model is EA. Are you opposed to microtransactions in AAA games?
