Wintermute Redux update for The Long Dark is out now

Frosty survival darling The Long Dark has finally received its long-awaited Wintermute Redux update. The extensive overhaul features a laundry list of changes and improvements to the two narrative episodes already available. The update is live now on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Watch the Wintermute Redux trailer here!

Indie developer Hinterland has done well on their promise to deliver an enhanced and expanded story experience for their hit survival title The Long Dark. With two of the planned five story episodes released already, players can experience a good chunk of the story right now.

Dubbed Wintermute Redux, the many changes and additions to Episode 1&2 will not only be a welcome change for those who want to replay the game but also give a glimpse at what’s in store for the remaining three episodes. You can read about all the new things in the new update on the developer’s post here. In a quick rundown, the four major pillars of Wintermute Redux are following:

Narrative Presentation: Fully voiced dialogue, new cinematics and more choices
Narrative Content: New locations, plot elements with re-written & re-recorded dialouge
Mission Structure: More flexibility on story progression with optional missions
Gameplay Improvements: Difficulty balancing, new story-critical weapons, reduced backtracking

It’s all pretty great stuff for returning players and newcomers alike and should nicely help alleviate some of the pain by the delay of Episode 3 into next year. For players not interested in the story mode, this update also brings many changes to the Survival Mode. New challenges, items and more offer lots for pure survivalist as well.

Hinterland has done a magnificent job with The Long Dark ever since its first appearance on Steam Early Access way back in 2014. Continuous support by the dedicated developers and their foresight to differentiate their survival game by working on a very solid story mode, has led to The Long Dark becoming one of the best-rated survival games on Steam.
